Tick and Insect Repellent

The Mountain Shield: Nature’s Protective Perimeter

The great outdoors should be a place of discovery, not a source of worry. At Flattop Mountain Herbs, we’ve developed a defense system that honors the environment while keeping its more persistent inhabitants at bay. Our Tick and Insect Repellent isn't just another spray; it is a meticulously layered aromatic barrier. While chemical repellents can feel harsh on the skin and the senses, our "Mountain Shield" uses a sophisticated blend of pure essential oils in a rich, skin-loving base to create a perimeter that bugs find repulsive, but you’ll find refreshing.

The Shield Ritual: Recipe & Jarring

A potent, aromatic blend designed for the trail.

The “Tick Free Trail” Recipe

Our Artisanal Process:

  1. The Base Melt: Using a double boiler over low heat, combine your carrier oil and beeswax. Stir gently until the wax is completely liquid.

  2. The Butter: Add the shea butter to the warm oil and stir until just melted. Remove the mixture from the heat immediately to prevent the high temperature from damaging the essential oils.

  3. The Infusion: Allow the mixture to cool slightly (but still remain liquid). Add the Rose Geranium, Peppermint, Lavender, Lemon Eucalyptus and Tea Tree and Vanilla. Stir gently to ensure the "protective scent" is evenly distributed.

  4. The Jarring: Carefully pour the liquid into small 2 oz glass jars or metal tins. These are the perfect size for hiking packs or gardening aprons.

  5. The Set: Leave the jars uncovered on a level surface for 2 hours. Once they have cooled to a firm, opaque solid, secure the lids and label.

Why It Works: The Layered Defense

Our repellent works through "olfactory confusion," using scents that insects naturally avoid to protect your skin.

  • Rose Geranium: This powerful essential oil is nature's primary deterrent for ticks. The woody, floral aroma creates an environment that ticks find uninhabitable.

  • Peppermint & Lavender: These oils provide a broad-spectrum defense against mosquitoes, gnats, and flies, while simultaneously soothing the skin and providing a cooling sensation.

  • The Vanilla Secret: Vanilla extract acts as a fixative, helping the other essential oils last longer on the skin, while adding a scent profile that bothers biting flies but smells wonderful to humans.

  • The Protective Base: The beeswax and shea butter base ensures the repellent stays on your skin—even through light perspiration—rather than evaporating quickly like alcohol-based sprays.

  • Lemon Eucalyptus: Recognized by the CDC as a viable natural alternative to DEET, this oil is a powerhouse for repelling mosquitoes and deer ticks. It adds a bright, clean scent to the mix.

  • Tea Tree Oil: Known for its antiseptic and antimicrobial properties, Tea Tree also acts as a strong repellent against a variety of biting insects, including flies and biting gnats.

How to Use:

Scoop a small amount and apply to ankles, wrists, the back of the neck, and any exposed skin before heading into wooded or grassy areas. Reapply every 2 hours or as needed for maximum protection.

A Note from Flattop Mountain Herbs:

Our Tick and Insect Repellent is 100% DEET-free and safe for the whole family. However, we always recommend a small patch test on the skin first. For external use only. Keep away from your eyes!
