Our Roots & Our Passion: The Flattop Mountain Herbs Story
As my daughter Carlee once playfully put it, "Mama, you are a match and you start stuff!" While my entrepreneurial sparks might have flickered in the past, the flame ignited for Flattop Mountain Herbs has burned bright and steady. This time, Carlee, we're bringing it all to fruition.
My childhood was steeped in the wisdom of the earth. Growing up in Alabama in the mid-20th century, my Mamaws and Papaws (that's Southern for grandparents!) Pat and Bishop lived off the land. They cultivated vibrant gardens, raised livestock, and embraced the pure goodness of raw milk. My own Mama and Daddy preserved harvests from their bountiful gardens, and I spent my days running through Papaw Pat's cornfields and Uncle Bud's peach orchards, with water drawn fresh from the well.
This upbringing instilled in me a deep appreciation for:
Fresh, unprocessed food
Healthy living
And, most importantly, the power of herbal remedies
Even as I pursued a career in nursing, graduating Summa Cum Laude with a passion for Anatomy and Physiology, my heart always returned to the home remedies that had nourished my family for generations.
The Spark Reignited: Flattop Mountain Herbs Takes Shape
In 1982, I forged a special bond with two fellow registered nurses through our churches in Culpeper, Virginia. Life and careers took us on separate paths for several decades, as we navigated the beautiful chaos of raising families.
But in 2021, four decades later, fate brought me back to the area. Those friendships, as true as ever, picked up right where they left off. It felt like no time had passed. Together, we founded Flattop Mountain Herbs. It was a joyful reunion! We dove headfirst into developing herbal recipes and remedies, setting up stalls at farmers' markets and local stores. There were many mornings of spitting out bitter teas and tinctures as we tirelessly worked to find the perfect ratios of proven ingredients – not just for efficacy, but for taste too! Our mission was always to help others feel their best, naturally.
A New Chapter: Sharing Our Herbal Legacy
Fast forward to today, 2026. My grandchildren are grown, and my dear friends from Flattop Mountain Herbs are in new seasons of their lives. While we've cherished our time stirring salves and shaking tincture jars, the demands of farmers' markets and shipping products have become a thing of the past for these 70-plus-year-old ladies.
Yet, our notebooks are brimming with decades of herbal wisdom, carefully perfected recipes, and innovative ideas. We may no longer be selling physical products, but our passion for natural wellness burns brighter than ever.
And so, we embark on a new adventure: sharing our cherished herbal recipes and knowledge with you!
Through the Flattop Mountain Herbs website and our social media channels, we'll be sharing the very remedies that have served our families and communities for years. We aren't writing a book just yet, but stay tuned for potential online teachings and insights.
From our first pregnancies to now, chatting about our fabulous grandchildren, our friendship and our dedication to natural wellness have remained constant. We are certainly not done yet! My match, Carlee, is still burning strong, ready to share our herbal legacy with the world.
Join us on this journey as we explore the healing power of nature, passed down through generations.
And God said, “See, I have given you every herb that yields seed which is on the face of all the earth, and every tree whose fruit yields seed; to you it shall be for food.

Mullein
Verbascum Thapsus
…has been used by the generations before us for natural care. Following in the footsteps of our ancestors, Flattop Mountain Herbs first began using the leaves of Mullein to make tea to soothe those with a cough.
Since that time, we continue to seek further benefits that may be crafted into products for purchase by our community.
Our plain mullein tea is made from organic mullein leaves. We do not use buds or flowers or stalks in our mullein teas, nor are they sprayed with anything harmful.
